What is the Mathnasium business model and concept?

Mathnasium is an international chain of year-round learning centers where children go to improve their math skills. We are highly specialized; we teach only math. Each franchised center utilizes the Mathnasium Method™, an individually customizable educational curriculum that has been created through over 40 years of classroom experience and research. Mathnasium’s mission: teach children math so they understand it, master, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

Mathnasium centers are open to members at least five days per week during after-school and weekend hours. Children are encouraged to attend 2-3 times weekly for best results. Since 2002, Mathnasium has been making difference in the lives of children. Today, we have more than 1,050 thriving centers across the globe.

What is the company history?

In the 1990s, education industry pioneers Peter Markovitz and David Ulendorff recognized that, to truly be successful in school and in life, students need a solid understanding of mathematics. There was a vast disconnect, though, between students’ learning skills and the math curriculum they were taught in school. To address the gap, they founded Mathnasium. After an exhaustive search, they found the perfect person to help them achieve their vision: Larry Martinek, a beloved educator, teacher trainer and curriculum consultant. Larry and Mathnasium’s expert team spend years refining the most powerful teaching methods and materials into the comprehensive, industry-leading Mathnasium Method.

What is the Mathnasium Method?

Since 2002, the Mathnasium MethodTM has transformed the way children understand and appreciate math. We help students exercise their minds, leading to “aha” moments that generate confidence and enthusiasm. Mathnasium’s proven assessment process pinpoints children’s exact strengths and weaknesses. Based upon the initial assessment, we customize a learning plan that details specific math concepts a child needs to master in order to meet their learning goals. Talented instructors teach face-to-face at the perfect pace, providing the attention and encouragement that promote learning. With our method, students learn how to think. We don’t believe that rote memorization or mechanically following algorithms leads to true understanding. Instead, our combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written teaching techniques addresses how each child learns best, ensuring concept mastery.

The result of 40+ years of development and millions of dollars invested, our methods and curriculum are unmatched. We’re the authority on math education. The Mathnasium MethodTM isn’t just about doing math, it’s about a total transformation in competence and confidence.

Who are the executives who lead Mathnasium?

Mathnasium is the collaboration of three leading education and business experts:

  • Peter Markovitz, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, is one of the world’s leading franchising and education services executives, having led global companies that have operated in more than 70 countries. He is responsible for Mathnasium’s strategic direction and long-term growth.
  • David Ullendorff, Co-founder and President, has an extensive career of combining education with the best elements of children’s entertainment. An award-winning filmmaker and developer of children’s media, his work has been featured on television in the United States and around the world. A pioneer in the field of computer literacy for children, David co-founded global education technology company Futurekids and developed the first definitive curriculum that was used to teach millions of children in 72 countries.
  • Larry Martinek, Chief Instructional Officer, has spent his entire 40+ year career in education finding a better way to teach and learn math. From inner-city public schools and acclaimed magnet schools to leading private and parochial schools, he has served as both a classroom teacher, teacher trainer and curriculum consultant. Larry is the architect of Mathnasium’s educational program — one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculums ever produced for teaching math.

Together, these visionaries have taken Mathnasium from an idea to a worldwide educational leader in the franchise industry.

What does a student do at Mathnasium?

Mathnasium provides an appealing and welcoming environment where a student receives both instruction and practice. Each student works independently of other students, following a curriculum based precisely on the student’s individual needs. Teachers, who are rigorously trained in our materials and method, provide instruction, guidance and encouragement.

Why do parents enroll their children in Mathnasium?

Mathnasium is effective, affordable, and highly specialized. We get results. This has been proven repeatedly in independent studies. Parents receive periodic reports detailing their child’s progress. Students enjoy their math “workouts.” Most importantly, they acquire number sense — the ability to think mathematically. We focus on building a solid foundation of skills, which maximizes each student’s success in school, and their ability to take standardized tests like the SAT, and beyond. There is a wonderful side benefit from this process: students’ boosted self-confidence.

What is a Mathnasium franchise?

A Mathnasium franchise enables you to own your own Mathnasium Learning Center in your community to help children from pre-K to pre-calculus boost their math skills. We teach you the business and grant you a license to use the Mathnasium name and Mathnasium business system, and we require you to implement the business system according to our standard of excellence. The system includes:

  • An education system – so you know what to teach and how to teach
  • A marketing system – to help you attract students to your center
  • A financial system – for collecting fees, paying bills, financial reports, etc.
  • An operations system – for daily management and administration

What advantages does Mathnasium offer that other franchisors might not?

Most of our franchisees tell us that an important factor in choosing Mathnasium is the nature of the work. They want a personally fulfilling venture as well as a sound financial opportunity. They want to enjoy what they do, and they want to look forward to going to work every day.

Additionally, our franchisees want to own a business that makes a real difference. They work better when they are passionate about what they do. Also, Mathnasium franchisees have found fundamental flaws with other education franchisors, including one or more of the following: high initial fees, huge investment per location, unfair territories, complicated business models and multiple subjects instead of our focused math-only approach. These flaws can diminish results for the children and diminish the value to their parents.

According to a study published by Watson Education in 2019 and commissioned by Mathnasium, our teaching methodology delivers results every day. Mathnasium franchisees also tell us they care about the company and the franchisee community they are joining. They like being part of a franchisor/franchisee community of accomplished and caring individuals. Everyone from our franchisees to our executive team is in alignment: We all want to help children succeed in math.

Can I open more than one Mathnasium Learning Center?

Yes. Talk with us about your plans for opening two or more centers. We will be glad to explain how you can be approved to develop additional Mathnasium centers as a multicenter franchisee. We even offer certain discounts to multiple location owners.

What is the typical profile of a Mathnasium franchisee?

We are looking for people who will be a great fit with our system: people who care deeply about helping children reach their potential and see business as a vehicle for realizing their financial goals. Our franchisees are enthusiastic, highly motivated, persistent and achievement-oriented — people who want to enjoy what they do. For some candidates, math was not their favorite subject in school. For many it was. Some once considered teaching math but were concerned with the level of compensation or feared being undermined within a hierarchical, bureaucratic school environment. Others struggled with math in school and have heightened sensitivity to the need to help children who are struggling. All are people who believe in the power of education to change lives.

What will it cost me to open my first Mathnasium center?

As with any new business, there are start-up costs that include setting up a center, an initial marketing campaign, and other one-time expenses. While this varies by geographic area, we estimate that the cost for opening a center in the United States ranges between AED 521,950 to AED 734,500.

What is the initial franchise fee?

Franchisees in the UAE pay AED 180,000 at signing.

What are the ongoing expenses of running a Mathnasium center?

Other than the royalties, expenses typically include:

  • Monthly rent for a ground floor retail space in your community (approx. 1,200 to 1,600 square feet)
  • Ongoing advertising and promotion
  • Instructors, as enrollment grows (paid hourly during teaching times)
  • Miscellaneous expenses, including phone, office supplies, and the like

What is the royalty?

Franchisees pay 15% of Gross Receipts from the operation of the Mathnasium Center within their territory.

Do I get an exclusive territory?

Yes. Each franchisee receives an exclusive territory designed so that they have an incentive to cooperate with one another and not compete for the same students.

How much money will I make as a Mathnasium franchisee?

As with any business, it depends largely on your own effort. Particularly important are the quality of service you provide, and how aggressively you promote the center, among other factors. We encourage you to make your own calculations, including both conservative scenarios and more aggressive targets. In simple terms, your profit in any given month is the difference between how much revenue you receive from customers and your expenses, which include the fees you pay to Mathnasium Center Licensing. Expenses vary depending on your area. To learn more about potential income, you can reference our Franchise Disclosure Document as well as speak with Mathnasium franchisees. You’ll have access to both once you engage in the steps to becoming a franchisee.

Do I have to teach children myself?

As a Mathnasium franchisee, you are only required to personally participate in the management and operation of your center(s). However, our goal is to make you comfortable with overseeing all aspects of running the center –– including working with children. Any business operates better when management is hands-on. You should be willing to invest your time and energy in all functions of the center, including teaching, with a plan to hire instructors on an as-needed basis as your enrollment increases.

What are the typical hours of operation?

The hours may vary depending on your location. Most Mathnasium centers are open for instruction after school Monday through Thursday from about 3-7 p.m., and many open on Saturday or Sunday. A typical Mathnasium center will be open at least five days a week, for at least four hours per day, for a total of about 20 hours per week of instruction.

How are Mathnasium center operators supported?

Providing a strong support system to franchisees is key to their success. Our goal is to help you launch your center speedily, comfortably, and confidently. We offer a thorough initial training program that prepares you to open your center, and then we continue to support you in various ways as you establish your operation. Throughout the process, we are always available to answer questions, and if you have a problem, we’ll try to help you solve it.

Our comprehensive ongoing support program includes:

  • Franchise Business Consultant performance coaching program
  • Tune-up training sessions
  • Conventions
  • Individual and group telephone conferences
  • Email Q & A
  • In-person consultation and meetings as necessary
  • Timely distribution of marketing and operations materials
  • Mathnasium Matters, a continually updated blog that covers everything Mathnasium
  • Mathnasium University, an online educational resource for operators to upgrade their franchise knowledge set, at times that best fit their lifestyle

Together, these support services not only provide stability for new franchisees, but also allow easy access to strategies for continued improvement.

What type of training does Mathnasium provide?

You will start with 40 to 50 hours of online interactive training. This is done in the comfort of your home and will prepare you for Mathnasium’s one-week initial training program in Los Angeles, which includes both classroom and interactive training. Our comprehensive and proven franchisee education program will cover step-by-step use of our operations manual and all the areas important to your success as a franchise owner.

Most importantly, you will be trained and supported on an ongoing basis by our dedicated franchise support team who will be there when you need help. The cost of this initial training is included in your franchise fee. You will be responsible only for your travel expenses. Before opening your Mathnasium Learning Center, you will also have the opportunity to take part in our Apprenticeship program where you will spend one week working hands on in a top-performing center in Los Angeles.

What type of advertising support can I expect?

Mathnasium employs a centralized marketing department that supports franchisee needs in 3 ways:

1.) To provide national advertising to build brand awareness across all territories where Mathnasium centers are opened,

2.) To prescribe the systems, training, activities, and vendors that franchisees should use to carry out local-level lead generation and conversion,

3.) To create and distribute the materials, imagery, ads and copy to be used in the local-level marketing systems.

In addition to the centralized marketing team, Mathnasium’s Franchise Business Consultants and Start Up Specialists are well-versed in the methodology to deploy effective marketing at the local level, and are at the service of every Mathnasium franchisee.
